The Germans had an organized program for murdering civilians, slaughtering 12 million or so in their camps, and more millions in Poland, Russia and eastern Europe, without bothering to send them to camps. The Japanese were likewise very brutal in the nations they occupied, but never got to the point of applying industrial principles to exterminate the populations like Germany did. The Americans and the British killed probably another couple of million civilians with aerial bombing campaigns against the cities of Germany and Japan, following the German example previously set by the bombardment of British and European cities during the blitz. Many merchant ships were sunk, with civilian crews, and occasionally a passenger ship with civilian passengers, by submarines of Germany, Japan, the US, Britain. Japan also engaged in bacteriological warfare "experiments" against the population of China. The Germans were fond of their policy of "10 for 1" - if the local resistance fighters killed one German soldier ten civilians would promptly be put in front of a wall and shot. German troops were also prone to indulge in massacres of civilians, in France and Italy.

How did many die in World War 2?

71-72 million people died worldwide in World War 2. 50 million of that was in the European Theater of the War. More of that death toll was of civilians than of military people and more of it was from starvation, disease, a world wide sickness, exposure, and lack of a place to live after the bombing campaigns: and lets not forget murder and torture.

How meny died in World War 2?

71-72 million people died worldwide in World War 2. 50 million deaths were the direct result of Adolph Hitler coming to power and causing all the mayhem he caused. More civilians than military people died. Many civilians and military people did not die from war wounds but rather from exposure, starvation, torture, murder and disease as a result of the war.
