This is do to the trench warfare. soldiers could battle for weeks on end and only gain a couple of feet. Also WW1 had a Gettysburg effect where a small battle would start and other soldiers would hear about it and converge to the same point and the battle would then become large.

What did the United States use to overcome the threat of Germany?

though the Americans were losing ww2 and suffering they had a plan thay always used. they would wait and fight till the last man standing died. they wouldn't leave until either they all died out or just complantly lost. And at Aachen in 1939 that hit the Germans hard on the western front with small British attack groups and Sherman's,thay used a lo of machine guns on the western front sense there were alot of trees protecting the and small bunkers.thougth the real reason was because the Germans started to lose political power's.people started to not help them out.then the American industries come back into order and took over.this ended ww2 in a flash and killed out most Nazis

Are you referring to the west of the country or the Western Front as in the First World War? If you are referring to the Western Front, then it is because so many young Australian soldiers lost their lives in battles there. Battles such as Fromelles, Pozieres, Bullecourt, Messines, Ypres and so on resulted in the deaths of many, which when you consider Australia had a relatively small population had a profound impact on the national mindset.
