Guys don't want to deal with stress and problems as well as the drama that goes along with it. Not knowing your situation between you two I can only speculate. If you had issues he could have been a shoulder to lean on but he could not have done anything directly for you that you may have had to do yourself and if he found that he was being pushed away or that you were just being too overbearing he really may have wanted out and not to have to deal with it. Unfortunately this does happen often but more often when its not the relationship that you thought you had.
