A tribe is essentially a large group of people speaking the same language and considering themselves politically interconnected. But food resources would never be sufficient to permit the entire tribe to live together in one place - so native Americans did notlive in tribes, but in bands. These were groups of families following their own chiefs and only occasionally meeting other bands of the tribe - and almost never seeing the entire tribe gathered together.
Even the bands might break up into smaller groups during the winter, if food became scarce.
