Well, Oskar knew the Nazis cruelity toward Jews, and was upset he couldn't save more. I mean, nearly 6 MILLION Jews died during the Holocaust, and he saved a little over 1,100. Wouldn't he want to save more? However, the ones he did save are truly miracles.
Some may have thought that g-d was going to save them, others thought that g-d had forsaken them. Others thought that the Holocaust was a punishment from g-d and others considered that throughout History Jews had suffered in one way or another and now it was their turn.
