It was a clash of empires, even more so than WW2, and it is difficult to equate in a modern context now that Imperialism is in the past. The question "Why should NZ get involved?" was probably not asked in NZ at the time, at least not aloud.

Basically whatever Britain did, NZ did. We were involved in Galipoli and many other battles.

New Zealand was given many colonies from Germany and other central powers, this includes Geman Samoa ( now known as western Samoa ) , Gallipoli ( now Modern Turkey ) etc. NZ also were able to take part in the Treaty of Versailles and the Leage of Nations. These were the positive effects of WW1 on NZ.
