Patchwork is just what it sounds. Before the time of sewing machines, all sewing was done by hand so people had very small wardrobes. Consequently, what clothes they had were worn often and if they got damaged repairs were made in the fashion of patches. Patches were hand sewn on from scraps of fabric that matched or not. After a while, some articles of clothing sported more patches than original fabric, hence the term patchwork.
