It was so named because some early naturalists and explorers thought that it's overall body shape resembled that of the more familiar camel, but at the same time it's markings were similar to those of a leopard. Hence the name 'cameleopard', as a fusion of the two.

B/c the shape was a bit similar to that of the camel, but the pattern of the hide was a bit similar to the hide of a leopard.
