Because he was popular and well-loved and the symbolic leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Wait, I thought Martin Luther king was the pope?
If you are referring to Pope Paul VI, he was succeeded by Pope John Paul I.
There were three: 1.Pope Paul VI 2.Pope John Paul I 3.Pope John Paul II
Pope John Paul II worked as a priest, then bishop and cardinal in Poland. When he was elected pope he then worked for over 26 years in Vatican City.
the church changed when Pope John Paul died and Pope Benedict took over. And that's all i know ! :)
Pope John Paul I died September 28, 1978Pope John Paul II died April 2, 2005
Pope Pius IX convened the First Vatican Council which began in 1868. Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council which began in 1962. Pope Paul VI reconvened the Second Vatican Council in 1963 after it was suspended due to the death of Pope John. Pope John had to close the First Vatican Council before opening the Second Council since the First Council was never officially closed by Pius, it ended abruptly, or temporarily suspended because the Franco-Prussian War broke out and the bishops in attendance wanted to return to their diocese. After Rome was captured, Pope Pius permanently suspended the Council but did not close it officially. Pope John died during the intermission break between the first and second session of the Second Council to which it was suspended. Once Cardinal Giovanni Montini was elected as Pope Paul VI, he reconvened the Second Council and presided over it until its ending in 1965.
Yes, indeed. The Church and people were surprised that Pope John XXIII, a "caretaker" pope had called a council at all. Then there was the battle royal between the Orthodox Catholic bishops and the Modernists. The most surprising part of all was the fact that the Council was basically ignored after it was over, and most of the changes put into effect were "in the spirit of Vatican II", a "spirit" which every recent pope from Pope Paul VI onward has defined as Satanic. Popes John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI made valiant efforts to get the Church back on track, and now Pope Francis has taken up the task.
Pope Saint John Paul II fulfilled all the necessary conditions for being considered a prophet. "A person regarded as an inspired teacher or proclaimer of the will of God" is the definition, and Pope Saint John Paul II fulfilled this to a "T". His Theology of the Body, which he taught in his Wednesday audiences over many years is just now being plumbed for the full depth of his brilliance. His Encyclicals are second to none, and are worthwhile reading for anyone who wants to understand Christianity better.
His papacy began on 16th October 1978 and it ended on 2nd April 2005. He was a pope for more than two and a half decades.
No, he did not decline treatment but quickly developed septic shock which, over a few days, shut down his organs and he died.
As of August 30, 2013, he has not yet been canonized but may be declared a saint later this year or in 2014. ******************************************* Pope John Paul II is widely admired for helping to bring about the fall of communism in Europe, at the end of the 1980's. The papcy often seems to be a purely ceremonial office, so it is impressive when a Pope accomplishes actual social change.
The papal tiara, or triple crown, is a symbol of the pope's office and of his temporal reign over the Vatican as head of state. The last pope to use the tiara was Pope Paul VI who died in 1978.
