The increase in agricultural production brought about by the agricultural revolution made it less possible for greater numbers of people to work outside agriculture. This gave rise to increasingly large towns and cities, which attracted people away from farming. When the Black Death hit, the serfs were offered better deals by lords on other manors, and this meant they were able to work in agriculture, but outside the manorial system, for example by paying rent.

Why are shanty towns found on the edge of cities?

Most of them are irregular settlements without proper utility services such as tap water, sewage and electricity. Also, as most shanty towns are irregular in nature, are not built properly - many "homes" are made from cardboard and corrugated steel sheets - in such a way that any natural disaster such as earthquakes and mudslides could prove to be disastrous.
