Why did people join the soviets against US during the coldwar?

If the country (nation) was too close to the Soviet Union, they usually had no choice. As for individuals wanting to join the Soviet Union, possibly they couldn't survive in a capitalistic society, and felt that they might have an easier life if the government took care of them.
