It would appear that medieval people did not use scrolls much at all. According to the article on Scrolls at Wikipedia, they virtually disappeared from use during the Middle Ages. In the same source, the article on the Book says that the codex came to dominate over the scroll with the rise of Christianity, in the 3rd and 4th centuries.
