The famous Pilgrims of 1620 came for both religious and secular reasons. Around 30 went because they were Separatists who believed the the Anglican Church was too corrupt to remain as a part of and needed to leave England to have the religious freedom to believe that. The other seventy went for money, land, adventure and other purposes along those lines.
