Russia originally signed a non-aggression pact with Germany in 1939. After jointly invading Poland, Germany violated that pact by invading Russia in 1941. Russia then changed powers and became one of the Allied countries.

For the very best reason, when attacked, fight back. "Turn the other cheek" and passive resistance can be effective tools at some levels, but they rarely work against bombs, tanks and thousands of armed men that are attacking you. Operation Barbarosa was charging in from Germany, and it had to be confronted, halted, reversed and destroyed. The USSR did just that at a tremendous cost.

Russia at first wasnt involved in the war because they didnt want to be in one after all the people who were killed during WW1. Stalin (Leader of Russia during WW2) decided to be friends with Hitler and sign the Non-Agression Treaty which meant that while Germany was trying to invade France to exterminate scapegoats(Jews, gypsies, gays..etc.) they wouldn't end up with another 2 front war(While Germany was invading France, Russia wouldn't invade from the East) . Basically they were both saying that they wouldn't attack each other. Hitler later tried to invade Russia an he did, but Hitler wasnt very smart because the Russian winter was deadly and Hitler did not supply his men with appropriate supplies. The Battle of Stalingrad(city in Russia) came as Germany invaded Russia and there Russia lost the most men out of all the other battles. This is the main reason why Russia got involved in the war because Hitler betrayed Stalin.
