Because the plantations in the south were more reliant on slave labor to produce crops, while in the north, they had little need for slaves due to the increased manufacturing in the north, plus, most northerners could not afford slaves

How did California affect the issue of slavery between the north and the south?

Calfornia extended so far either side of the Missouri line (North of which slavery was illegal) that it rendered the Missouri Compromise unworkable, so a new one had to be worked out. It was a patched-up deal, and it did not last.

What was the goal of the primary goal of the civil war?

Power. Money is and the south was an agricultural power house. There was a lot of business in the south from around the world and the north felt power was too strong in the south . Especially since the last 3 or 4 presidents were from the south. They knew the people of the north would support any action taken against the south because of money and power , so they pushed slavery to the front. The preachers in the north preached hard on slavery and helped get the peoples support and the rest in history. By the way Delaware (in the north ) was the last state in the union to abolish, cease and desist in the slavery trade. The south was forced to quit in 1865 and Delaware kept it up for a few years after the Civil War had ended.

Why did Lincoln's election cause the South to Secede from the union?

He intended to avoid using force of any kind. Lincoln was nominated by the Republican Party, which had taken a public position against the expansion of slavery into the newly acquired territories. Furthermore, his personal views against slavery were well-known, and he was perceived as a strongly partisan, anti-Southern, abolitionist candidate. The South saw Lincoln's election as the last of a number of pro-North actions by the government. After northerners' abuse of the Fugitive Slave Law and legislation such as the Compromise of 1850 that seemed to heavily favor the North, many slaveholders felt that the government was no longer equally representing their political views. South Carolina led the secession from the Union, declaring that the government no longer acted with the consent of the government, and had become destructive of the ends for which it was established.

The duration of "summer" isn't really related to longitude; it is related to latitude, north or south.

Was Jefferson Davis agenst slavery?

Jefferson Davis was not totally against slavery...however, he like many in the South knew that slavery was not going to last very much longer... because of economical reasons.. in other words modern technologies such as the cotton gin, reaper, and tractors were changing the way people in the south did farming. Effectively. They did try a last compromise, but Lincoln rejected it because it would have allowed some extension of slavery.

North and South disagreed anyway about extending slavery into the West. The Missouri Compromise (1820)drew a line in the sand - anywhere North of that line, slavery would be illegal. It kept the peace for thirty years.

Why was Gettysburg the turning point in the war?

Meade turned back Lee's last invasion of the North. Although the true strategic turning point was Vicksburg.

Did the Missouri Compromise end slavery?

No, and it was not intended to. It was a largely successful attempt to mediate the disagreement between North and South, by fixing a single line of latitude, and making slavery illegal anywhere North of that line. It lasted thirty years until the admission of California, which extended so far on either side of the line that a new Compromise had to be worked out. That one did not last.

Did the south agree to surrender to the north if they could keep there slaves?

No. That was never in prospect after the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1863. In fact, the very opposite happened in the last weeks of the war, when the South appealed to Britain for military aid, and offered to abolish slavery in return. It was no deal.
