Lee, disapproved of secession, but supported their state when it did vote to secede. Eastern Tennessee was always pro-Union, and in the second half of the war, Tennessee could almost be counted as a Union state.

The question is not valid. The South never wanted to save the Union. It was trying to break away from it, and form a separate nation. It is true that many prominent Southerners were strongly against secession, but they all felt they should go with their States.
Many counties in North Texas opposed secession because most of the residents were originally from states of the Upper South.
