they would go to the mason dixon line (seperated north and south parts of america). once they escaped from their owners in the south, they would cross the mason dixon line into the northern half of america. once a slave was in the northern half of america, they were free from their owners

Most slaves in the North American continent came from Africa but not all. Some were Chinese, and some Native Americans held slaves at the time that Abraham Lincoln freed all the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation, these people too were free.

Panama is in Central America, which is considered by some to be part of North America, and by some to be distinct from both North and South America.
The slavery impact on the development of colonial America was great, slaves were brought to the colonized america to work. Some slaves were in an area that abolished slavery so they were kind of like citizens in north but in the south they were treated like a working horse. Also slaves helped and maintained the cotton and tobacco fields, helping colonies create income.
Some would say there wasn't a 'need' as such, it was the leaders that organised the shipping of slaves that influenced the idea that the people of north america needed someone to do the dirty work, because black people in that time were seen as less then the white, they believed that they 'needed' someone to do the cleaning cooking ect. more and more people became influenced and greedy so demand (need) for slaves grew :) hope this helped :)
