Not all European countries were convinced that the a single European currency would be viable without a complete political union of all the countries in the Euro-zone. They could not see how economic and budgetary discipline could be maintained across the political and banking system of the independent states and as they did not want to make Europe a single country, they refused to join the Euro.
It would appear from the problems that have happened with the Euro, that they were correct.

France is part of the Eurozone (European countries all using the Euro as their common currency), thus the money is the Euro.

Euro being the parallel currency compared to other international currencies, it is important to European countries vis a vis internationally. So, rather than coming out of euro currency basket, they should try to strengthen euro for its global importance.
12 currencies are used in the European Union. 17 countries use the Euro and the other 11 countries each use their own currency. In January 2014 18 will use the Euro and 10 will have their own currencies, so then there will be just 11 currencies.
