Because men in the war would go door to door taking people and drafting them into the war but you didn't have to go if you gave them $300 right then and there so all of the poor men had to go and fight

Because the Confederacy had a law that anyone owning a certain number of slaves could be sent home; therefore the men/boys who weren't rich enough to live on plantations and such had to fight in part to preserve the way of life favored by those better off.
