Indeed they did, with all of the protests and riots, Rich mans war, poor mans fight, comes not from the Vietnam War, but from the US Civil War. Some people think that it was optional, but it was not.

∙ 11y agoThere were many losses in men in early battles such as the first and second battles of bull run, Shiloh, Antietam, etc. Therefor the North needed more soldiers in order to keep up with the South. The draft of 1863 took Northern civilians and did just that. However the North had an advantage because they had more people to draft. This is because the North was more urban and the South rural.
