During the Civil War era, there was a great debate about the ethics of slavery. The southerners seceded because they did not agree with laws that were prohibiting slave ownership, and this started the Civil War.
The south (Confederate States of America) seceded from the United States because they were under-represented in congress, and were the victims of tax, slave, and other laws that endangered their culture and way of life, and they were laws that the southern states didn't believe the federal government should be able to make (i.e. laws that should be delegated to state authority). For many years, they fought these laws, but because of their low population density, they got little representation in the house, and even less in the senate. When president Lincoln was elected, the southern states knew they no longer had any hope in preserving their way of life in the United States, so they created their own country, which was promptly invaded by the United States and massacred.
