The Spanish withdrew from Florida twice. The first time was at the Peace of Paris in 1763, which ended the French and Indian War, which was know of outside North America as the Seven Years War. In that treaty, the Spanish gave control of Florida to the British. When the British lost their American colonies in the American Revolution, they gave Florida back to Spain. After the War of 1812, the United States was having increasing trouble with the Seminole Indians who lived in Florida, and this increased their interest in that area. The Spanish were worried about American designs on Texas, parts of which were included in land claims relating to the Louisiana Purchase. So the Spanish gave up their claims to Florida, which was mostly under U. S. control anyway, in exchange for promises that the U. S. would not press claims on Texas, plus five million dollars.
