In 1898, an American naval ship, the USS Maine exploded. The yellow journalists of the time seized upon the opportunity to create a completely invalid accusation, that Spain was responsible for the bombing. As a result, the people of the United States were manipulated into demanding a war with Spain.
The USS Maine exploded in the harbor of Havana, Cuba in 1898. So-called "yellow Journalism" was slanted against Spain, and demanded an explanation. Most people,including the US President were not in favor of a war with Spain. The US had been viewing developments in Cuba for over fifty years. At one point in time the Confederacy had been thinking of taking over Cuba, and having slaves work the land.
Now, many decades later, a freedom movement arose in Cuba. Many Cuban revolutionaries were seeking independence from Spain. American newspapers sided with the rebel cause in Cuba. When the USS Maine exploded, killing many American sailors, Spain was blamed.
Neither Wall Street nor big business wanted a war. They had made investments in Cuba under the Spanish rule there. And, many European nations believed the US would lose a war with Spain over Cuba. When war finally erupted, only Great Britain supported the US. In two years the war ended. Cuba would have its independence.
It was very brief.
It had limited casualties.
It was reasonably cheap.
It had a series of great victories.
It accomplished each of its goals.
It ended Spanish influence in North America.
It earned new respect for the nation as a World Power.
