It was only out of necessity that the Americans used atomic bombs on the Japanese in World War II. They Japanese were prepared to fight, down to the last child, to prevent the invasion of their land. Thus, it was with great sorrow that the Americans dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was a terrible thing, but it utterly demoralized the Japanese. As a result, many lives were spared. It was one of those awful cases where, no matter what, there had to be a large loss of life.
To utterly simplify and bastardize it, the Americans did it to end the war quickly and show to the world the power they had developed.
