The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie
Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated, along with his wife Sophie, on June 28, 1914, while visiting Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina (which was then under administration by Austria-Hungary). The assassination set off a chain of events that would lead to the start of World War I barely one month later.
He was in Sarajevo
He wasn't. Serbia was a tiny, independent neighboring country. The Archduke and his wife were on a tour of inspection, visiting the capital of a province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Sarajevo. He was in his own Empire. One reason he went there was to show his wife a good time. She was a commoner and the Royal Court snubbed her at every chance. In Sarajevo she would be shown all the respect and honor due to his wife, whom he loved very much. Instead they died together.
