Germany and its Axis partner Italy, aimed to cut the Suez Canal route to UK early in WWII.

Libya and other parts of N Africa were nominally colonies of Italy, and the Axis were pressing eastwards to threaten Egypt, which controlled the Suez Canal.

The Axis landed many troops and reinforcements along the N coast of N Africa, and it was these that the Allied forces eventually evicted.
