Because Tenochtitlan was built on a lake, they made small pathways to the mainland. This made it hard for invaders to mass attack because they could only move so many people across the bridges at a time. Not only that, but because their city was built on the water, they grew they were able to grow their own food on floating gardens, called Chinampas. This meant that even during a time of siege, they could continue to provide for themselves.
