The Siege of Leningrad was important because it was the largest city in Russia, it represented the Russian Revolution and was the former capital of Russia, it had several munitions factories, and a major military port. The siege caused the deaths of over 1 million citizens, mostly through starvation, giving it the distinction of being the siege that killed by far the most people in human history.

This was the battle in which the Red Army defeated and took German Nazi prisoners. It was a turning point for the Soviets. They continued to defeat the Nazis all the way to Berlin Germany where the Nazis finally surrendered to the Reds and the other Allied Forces.

he battle was fought for a few reasons. The main one was thaty Hitler wanted to occupy it to occupy the key seaport on the Volga River. Also, the city was name after the USSR leader 'Joseph Stalin', so if Hitler occupied 'Stalin's city' then it would be embarrising and a crushing defeat morally for the USSR.

Hitler wanted to take Stalingrad because that city was a hub of transportation, it had resources and it was near the oil fields of the Caucasus region. Hitler planned to use it to supply his war effort and future dream for Germany.

Stalingrad, in mid-south Russia, was where the Soviet's halted the German advance. You see, Russia had a bitterly cold winter, and the Germans ran out of food and other supplies when they got to Stalingrad. The Soviets ideally cut off their supply route, rendering the Nazis cornered. The Soviets are adapted to the winter and the Germans held out in Stalingrad for 6 months, until they were eventually crushed and forced all the way back to Germany. Stalingrad was the turning point of the war.
