The Bible is HISTORY His-story, God's story. Since the creation of the world with man and woman, history began. All through the Old Testament God was preparing mankind for the Messiah to enter the world scene. As time went on the Old Testament books were written to tell mankind what God was doing through Israel because Israel is the nation through whom the Messiah would come.
It took many, many years for God to shape Israel and prepare Israel to bring forth the Messiah. God first started with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and through Jacob He brought forth the tribes of Israel. He gave them His laws (Law of Moses), to teach Israel obedience, but sadly they failed over and over, with only a few reaching the righteousness of God. But the foundation was laid through this process. These books could not be written until God was ready for them to be written.
Finally approximately 2000 years ago the Messiah came to earth through the Person of Jesus Christ, God's Son.
The Four Gospels in the New Testament is the story of Jesus from His birth, ministry, death on the cross and His resurrection three days later. They also contain rules for a righteous life
The rest of the New testament fills in the gaps of how to live for Jesus after you have became regenerated from your old life, including more rules.
Parts of these other books contain prophecy as to what is coming. The book of Revelation is what you might call the master book about this coming age.
By reading and lots of study in the Old and New Testaments you can get a fair picture of what life is all about and what it is going to be like in the future.
No one will completely understand everything that is written in the Bible, but God has given it to us to read and understand as much as He wants us to understand.
