The Cherokee people were given a very easy choice before the Trail of Tears, either:

1) Leave their tribal Homelands without any clothing or personal possessions at gunpoint, or 2) Be shot and killed.

They were being forcibly removed from their homelands and made to travel through the winter to a new land in Oklahoma. Some 4000 died along the way.

Because a lot of there people died. The native Americans walked for hundreds of miles and they were dying of starvation and thirst and smallpox from infected blankets they were given.

Native Americans were forced down the Trail of Tears by americans sent by the President at the time. It was sad and lots of indian children died.
