According to the History channel the Cyclops myth may have come from elephant skulls found on the islands around the time of the Greece/Troy wars and Homer. An elephant has a large nostril hole where human eye holes are and could be easily confused to be a human skull with only one eye.

According to myth, the Cyclops gave up one eye to their god to gain the ability to see the future, but their god only gave them the ability to see their own death.
