The Patroon System was an attempt to make the colony grow, unfortunately it failed.
The Dutch West India Company set up the patroon system as an inducement to get people to come to the colonies. The patroon system was sort of a feudal aristocracy, In exchange for bringing 50 adults to his estate over a four-year period and providing livestock, tools, and buildings, a patroon was given a 25-kilometer river-front plot, exclusive fishing and hunting privileges, and civil and criminal jurisdiction over his lands. The adults the patroon brought over were considered tenants, and they paid the patroon rent and gave him first option on surplus crops.
a person would receive 16 square miles off land
The patroon system was set up by the Dutch in order to attract wealthy investors to establish large land grants in the New World, particularly in New Netherland (present-day New York). It was a way to encourage rapid colonization and development of the area by offering economic incentives to investors who could bring in settlers and cultivate the land.
A patroon refers to a colonial Dutch land holder, a person in the colonial era holding an estate of land that had some manorial rights. The patroons enjoyed walking on their property and overseeing any work being done.
