The Dutch West India Company set up the patroon system as an inducement to get people to come to the colonies. The patroon system was sort of a feudal aristocracy, In exchange for bringing 50 adults to his estate over a four-year period and providing livestock, tools, and buildings, a patroon was given a 25-kilometer river-front plot, exclusive fishing and hunting privileges, and civil and criminal jurisdiction over his lands. The adults the patroon brought over were considered tenants, and they paid the patroon rent and gave him first option on surplus crops.
