∙ 14y agoThe Exxon Valdez struck Bligh Reef while maneuvering to avoid icebergs as it was outbound from the Valdez oil terminal. This tore through its single hull and crude oil began to escape. The Exxon Valdez was on autopilot, and was (after Coast Guard clearance) using the inbound shipping lane in an effort to avoid some of the floating ice in the shipping channel.
