The vast majority of people in France were poor peasants or day laborers and their status was miserable. Taxes were much too high and the richest classes were exempted. Inflation began to rise and the price of bread, the staple food, soared (due to bad harvests, and to speculation). Unable to earn their livelihood, people began to stir up. The general discontent was supported by educated members of the bourgeoisie (the middle class) and some members of the nobility such as Lafayette who had sympathy for the poor and were aware of the changes of the times (the enlightenment period). The changes in America were an example for these people who were leaders in the French Revolution, until more radical leaders took up. In the same moments that political action began, angry and hungry mobs stormed the toll booths, the grain reserves, and the prison of the Bastille.

The same reasons most people have done so throughout history: social upheaval as the majority realise they are oppressed and can take back the power they are entitled to.

They felt at the time that it was a bad idea to rebel against an exiting government, because we all depend upon government to preserve law and order, and if you rebel against the government, you might wind up with total anarchy, chaos, and madness.
