There are two ways in which the American Revolution helped cause the French Revolution:

  1. The French paid an exorbitant amount of money to help sustain the Colonial Rebel Army and for French armies and navies to fight against the British. As a result, French coffers were notoriously bankrupt.
  2. The ideas of the American Revolution, such as the equality of all people and personal freedoms were very attractive to the French bourgeoisie who were limited by authoritarian laws and legal inequalities with the French nobility and clergy. The success of the American Revolution served to inspire the French to rise up and clamor for equality.

The Enlightenment produced such ideas as the basic rights of life, liberty, and property by john Locke, or Rousseau's General Will, meaning the government should serve the interests of the common will, or the greater good in other words. These Enlightenment ideas eventually spread across Europe and even to the American colonies, and the people realised both John Locke's and Rousseau's ideas were absent in the British government over the 13 colonies and French government prior to their revolutions (both were autocractic with the British government extensively limiting the colonies's trading rights and the French monarchy suppressing the lower class's opinions). This then provoked the American revolution and French Revolution to pursue these Enlightenment ideas.
