They were losing badly due to outdated tactics where foot soldiers and cavalry on horseback were crushed by German panzers regiments. The Blitzkrieg tactics had taken the military by surprise -they thought the Germans simply couldn't cross the Ardennes- the army was utterly disorganized, Civilians were fleeing in droves on the roads pushing handcarts with their belongings under German aviation fire.
