They were losing badly due to outdated tactics where foot soldiers and cavalry on horseback were crushed by German panzers regiments. After the reimbarkment of the British Expeditionary Force at Dunkirk, under protection of French regiments, they had little choice. The Blitzkrieg tactics had taken the military by surprise -they thought the Germans simply couldn't cross the Ardennes- the army was utterly disorganized, Civilians were fleeing in droves on the roads pushing handcarts with their belongings under German aviation fire.

because they were still recovering their army from the first world war, and did not have time to retaliate against the nazi invaders

They surrenderd because they had no choice, Germany was advancing to France and the french military couuldnt stop them so they surrenderd
