I am not sure they did. It is part of the Black Hills which were considered scared by Native American plains tribes. According to Native American tribes Kiowa and Lakota a group of girls went out to play and spotted several giant bears who chased them. To get away from the bears the girls climbed on top of a rock and prayed to the Great Spirit to save them. Hearing their prayers the Great Spirit made the rock rise from the ground towards the heavens so the bears couldn't reach them. The bears left deep claw marks trying to climb the rock, but it was too steep for them. When the girls reached the sky they were turned into stars. There are several stories like this one from various tribes, but it matches nothing like your question and what you think it was called. In fact, just the opposite.
The bad guys
Siege towers were of benefit in breaching enemy defenses/fortifications . For those within the siege engine itself they were in danger of having boiling oil scalding them and if the tower were set alight then those trapped could be burned alive or subject to missiles as they attempted to exit and flee from the tower itself .
the natives have been happy to trade things but by 1608 the colonist got bad reputation among indians. They destroyed their food supplies, isolated indians and burned down houses.
