This, in turn, increased the material wealth of the nations involved, creating employment in cities thereby drawing vast numbers of people away from rural living and agricultural work.

The industrial revolution is often portrayed as being very cruel on the workers, and doubtless it was, but it is important to remember the improvements to quality of life that resulted from it. The idea of rural life in 17th century England as being idyllic, where workers lived in the sun and ate wholesome food is a fable. The reality is that pre-industrial life was brutal, where workers lived in poverty and darkness.

The industrial revolution was not pretty, but it gave the working class a chance to live a life with dignity and hope for simple material enjoyment.
