These are the most important points of disagreement between the religions. However, Christians and Muslims have been known to struggle against one another for reasons having nothing to do with theology. Sometimes religious strife is just a mask for political strife.

The most important wars between Muslims and Christians were the Crusades, which were spread over a period of nearly two hundred years. They started because of a mixture of mistrust and arrogance. They continued out of a mixture of religious fervour, adventure and opportunities for wealth and influence.

In 1009, the Fatimid caliph of Cairo had the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem destroyed. His successor permitted the Byzantine Empire to rebuild it under stringent circumstances, and pilgrimage was again permitted, but many stories began to be circulated in the West about the cruelty of Muslims toward Christian pilgrims. The final trigger for the First Crusade came about when Muslim forces began to advance into territory of the Byzantine Empire.
