They were VERY angry with him. He was telling them that he was the Son of God and that he had come to save them. First f all, people don't like painful things. To accept that Jesus was there to save them would mean that they would have to know that they needed saved. Secondly, he made all sorts of claims about himself (all of which except what he has said about the end of the world) had already come true. Third, the Pharisees were worried that it would be known that they weren't as holy as they had always been made out to be and that their power would be taken away from them.
