All during the thirties when the world economies remained in the doldrums, Germany was secretly rearming. When war finally broke out, England and France were not prepared. The German war machine swept through the low countries and around the Maginot Line and invaded France. England almost lost its army at Dunkirk.

Roosevelt knew that once Hitler had defeated England, he would consolidate his hold on Europe and then look toward the Americas.

While the political climate in the States was isolationist, the President and his cabinet came up with Lend-Lease in order to supply England with much needed war materials. England did not have the industrial capacity to manufacture enough ships, planes, and tanks to process the war. They were also not able to purchase materials; thus Lend-Lease.

Let's face it; it's better to give the club to your neighbour and let him go out and face the mad dog then to wait for it to come to your doorstep.
