In the 1980's? The Church of Latter-Day Saints was created in the 1830's. Answering the questions why Joseph Smith created the church is kind of tricky. If you are a believer in the church then you would probably say that Joseph Smith created it because he was divinely inspired by a vision and was given the Book of Mormon; if you don't believe in it then you probably assume Joseph Smith created the church for selfish reasons or simply had an illness which caused him to think he had a vision and completely fabricate the Book of Mormon. The above answer is a very good summary of why he created the church. I will only add to what the person had said. Joseph was confused of to which sect to join so he asked the Lord, that's when he got his inspiration to restore the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The church had once existed in ancient times, to find out more I suggest you ask a local member, maybe a friend. * Smith and the Methodists It is interesting to note that as early as 1828 members of the Methodist Church were forced to make a decision with regard to Joseph Smith. Smith had taken steps to join their church, but they felt his dealings in witchcraft made him unfit to be a member. * The Mormon Prophet Attempts to Join the Methodists By Wesley P. Walters In June 1828 Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of Mormonism, joined the Methodist Church [probationary class] in Harmony, Pennsylvania. This was a strange thing for this prophet of a new religion to do, and seriously challenges the story he put out ten years later about the origin of his work.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the official name of the Church and has been since the early days. "Mormons" is a nickname given to members of the Church by their enemies, although most Church members have accepted it and no longer find it offensive. The "Mormons" were always a part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because they are the same thing!

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) began because God the Father and Jesus Christ directed Joseph Smith to do it. The story goes that some of his family had joined the Presbyterians, while others were interested in the Methodists and the Unitarians. He wanted to join a church but didn't know which one. He decided he would pray to ask God which church he should join, and received in answer a miraculous vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ, in which they directed him that none of the Churches had the full truth of the Gospel and that he had been chosen to organize the true Church of Jesus Christ. In short, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began out of a belief that all other existing Churches had gone astray, and that Jesus Christ himself would have to restore the truth to the earth.

Because they were asked to do so by the United States Military and felt it was their duty to serve their country when asked.

Is mormon coulee cemetery for Mormons only?

No. Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery actually has almost nothing to do with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church). The cemetery is located in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, which was the home of a small group of Mormons in 1844, who named the area "Mormon Coulee". The Mormons moved on after only about a year, but some things in town, such as Mormon Coulee Road and Mormon Coulee Memorial Park, use the name in honor of the town's heritage.

How long does a blue Mormon live?

As a Mormon I have never heard of the term Blue Mormon. As to how long Mormons live, they live as long as is normal as for any non Mormons, unless the Lord calls them back for some special reason. This question was misplaced... the Blue Mormon is a type of butterfly. But I'm not sure of the lifespan.

Who dislikes Mormons?

Many people dislike the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) or it's members. There is quite a large anti-Mormon movement, and quite often Mormon conferences and events are protested or picketed. Many religious organizations dislike the teachings of the Mormon church, but understand that it would be unfair to dislike the Mormons themselves simply based on some of their religious ideas. There are even many Christian churches that hold classes on how to argue against Mormons.

Is Ryan Gosling a Mormon?

Ryan Gosling was born to Mormon parents. His parents divorced when he was young and it is unknown if he was ever baptized into the faith. (Mormons are baptized at age 8 or older) If he was baptized, he has not been a practicing Mormon for quite some time.

How popular is mormonsim?

It depends on where you are. Worldwide, there are about as many Mormons as there are Jews (both report approximately 14 million adherents). In the US, about 2% of people are Mormons (making Mormonism about as popular as the United Methodist Church) In Utah, about 70% of people are Mormon, with some cities being as high as 98% Mormon.

What are the different types of Mormons?

Anyone who is a "Mormon" is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The church is very unified in its organization and doctrine, so all Mormons should have most of the same beliefs and practices. However, Mormons do come from all races, nationalities, cultures, and backgrounds. Mormons are rich and poor, White and Black, Asian and Hispanic. They are united by their common faith and nothing else. Of course everyone has a different level of activity or involvement in their religious faith. Some Mormons are more religous than others, just as you would find in any religion. Mormons sometimes refer to 'active', 'less-active', and 'non-active' members, which refers to how active an individual is in their congregation. There are also a small number who claim to be Mormon but are actually members of various break off groups. They still believe the basic foundation of Mormonism, and so call themselves Mormons, but disagree with the mainstream Mormon church on some aspect. For example, some call themselves "Mormon Fundamentalists" or "Mormon Polygamists". These are not members of the mainstream Mormon church, so they are not technically Mormons. They belong to splinter groups which broke off when the mainstream church banned the practice of polygamy. They are not recognized as Mormons by the "Mormon" church. Do Mormons own hotels?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) does not own or operate any hotels. Many individual Church members may own or operate hotels. While it would be impossible to know about each one, we do know of some large national chains that are either owned by Mormons or have Mormons in high level positions. For example, the CEO of LaQuinta is a Mormon, and the founders and owners of the Marriott chain are Mormon.

Is Benton Harbor Michigan connected to Mormons?

No, not really, aside from the fact that some Mormons live in Benton Harbor (although their congregation is located in neighboring St. Joseph). Michigan does have some very interesting early Mormon history, but Benton Harbor was not a part of it.

Is there a branch of Mormons with different beliefs than the original Mormon church?

I'm just learning about the mormons religon but I do not thank they have a differnet beleif then any other mormons. They come from all around to teach us the good and great , powerful lord , jesus christ & will all ways do the same belief to all persons of the relgion. -------- another answer: There are many small groups which have split off from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) for different reasons. Some people still consider members of these groups Mormon because they still believe in the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith, however there are some major differences between them and the original mainstream Mormon church. The largest of these breakoff groups are the Community of Christ, the FLDS, and the Apostolic United Brethren. The Mormon Church considers these to be apostate groups and does not accept them as Mormon.

What route did the more Mormon follow to the west?

Most Mormons followed the Mormon Trail, which was roughly the same as the Oregon trail until the Mormon trail split off to Utah in Wyoming. Some Mormon pioneers took a boat around South America, docked in California, and travelled to Utah through Nevada.

What are the names of all the Mormons on this app that keep saying there is no archeological evidence to support Mormonism?

Sorry, it is against WikiAnswers policy to reveal personal information for other people. Suffice it to say that some Mormons believe there is archaeological evidence for the Book of Mormon and some do not, but all agree that belief in the Book of Mormon is to be taken on faith alone and not based on any tangible or scholarly evidence.
