The Portuguese were famous for tile importation and a little less so for tile production. The Portuguese also had colonial port cities in Morocco (like Mogador, Tangiers, etc.) and they had colonial port cities in China (like Macao). The tiles produced in Morocco and China were fundamentally different from each other and from the tiles produced in Portugal. The composition of the clays, the techniques of glazing, colors used, way the pieces are shaped, and whether there are images on those tiles (and what images they are) are completely different between these groups.
However, all three types of tiles were in demand in Continental Europe and since Portugal had colonies in Morocco and China, Portugal was able to bring these goods to European demand.
