As the empire deteriorated so did it's standards of morality. In any case, what ancient people considered to be humane ways of treating people and what we do today, in a society largely influenced by Christian ideas, are two quite different things.
The Lions served two purposes. They provided 'entertainment' for the masses, even if barbaric from our perspective. Such 'entertainment' also served the purpose of one of a number of brutal forms of capital punishment. These punishments were intended firstly to act as a deterrent to any the state considered to be criminals. The 'entertainment' was necessary to satisfy the growing group of idle people, made so by the large number of slaves from nations conquered by the Romans, who did the work the idle probably could and should have been doing.
For one, gladiators never really fought lions. Lions were used either as a means of execution, or more commonly to be shown off either through displays or through fights with other animals or lions. Yes, it seems so. Justin Martyr writes, " though beheaded, crucified, thrown to wild beasts, chained we did not give up our confession." The numbers are unknown of how many were persecuted, but modern scholars believe it was not as great a number as we think. Out of 54 emperors who ruled from 30 to 311 AD only a dozen went out of their way to persecute Christians and often it was sporadic, localized, and dependent on the political climate. Some were after church property. The Romans were generally tolerant of other religions and viewed the early Christians as something foreign or different to be distrusted. Bad for society.

The division between pagan Romans and Christian Romans during the time of the Roman Empire lead to many Christian Roman's executions. Tried for cannibalism, not worshipping the emperor, practicing secret rituals, not worshipping Roman gods, and not sacrificing to the Roman gods, thousands of Christians were burned at the stake, eaten by lions, or killed in public executions by various means.
Many people are caught poaching lions. Their punishment is way too lenient.
yes There are no lions in the North of Africa today because the Romans used the all for fighting in the Colosseum. After about 100 days they would slaughtered them. Because they slaughtered so many they ran out of lions in North Africa. So blame the Romans for wiping out the North African lions!
