Aqueducts were water conduits which supplied fresh water to the cities. They carried it from the water sources on the mountains. The word comes from aqua (water) and duct (A channel or tube for conveying something). Most of them were underground pipes. The conduits were also placed on bridgework when the aqueducts had to cross valleys or when they were needed to maintain a gradient as they relied on gravity to make the water move.
So they would have plenty of fresh unpolluted water in major cities. Only mountain spring water could be depended on to be unpolluted as raw sewage was dumped by cities directly into any nearby river or lake (making them stink).
The ancient Romans used aqueducts to bring water to their cities.
Actually, the Romans did. They made aquaducts and a means to carry water away plus they had a form of bathroom.
It's not particularly important that it was the Romans that invented them, but many things still used today were invented by the Romans. Central heating, concrete, the law that states a person is innocent until proven guilty, aquaducts.
Romans build monuments because they have superb engineers and their monuments make an impression on tourists.
To build underwater foundations for the docks of some ports the Romans used concrete.
Yes the Romans really built the aquaducts.
Aqueducts are structures designed to transport water from one location to another, typically to supply cities or areas with freshwater. They were common in ancient Roman civilization and were built using a combination of underground tunnels, elevated channels, and elevated bridges to support and direct the flow of water.

They made some very large buildings and roads that still connect Europe. Cement was what they brought to the construction event. A Keystone held together arches. Aquaducts brought water to cities from far away. They build a lot of "bath houses".
