First it is necessary to establish whether the Jews persecuted the Christians, and what form that persecution took. Our earliest records come from Paul, a Jew himself. He admits to persecuting the Christians, but it is unclear from his epistles what form this persecution took, or why he persecuted them. Some scholars suggest that Paul had, in fact, only persecuted those Christians who sought to convert Gentiles without the need for circumcision. Paul also tells us that he went to Jerusalem to visit the 'pillars' of the church there. There is nothing in his account to suggest that in the forties and fifties of the first century, the Jerusalem church was actually being persecuted.

Acts of the Apostles differs from Paul's own accounts in various ways, including the outright claim that the Jews were persecuting the Christians. On this, it must be remembere that Acts was only written quite some time after the final break between Judaism and Christianity, a time of high tension between the two faiths. It could be unfair to find reasons for persecution of the Christians in Acts of the Apostles, in the absence of any corroborating evidence.

For different reasons, Paul and Acts both fail to provide convincing reasons why the Jews persecuted the Christians, if indeed they did.

The Jews persecuted the early Christians because they were considered heretics. Early Christianity was not immediately a separate religion, it was considered a Jewish sect. It was not until the reign of the emperor Domitian that they were separated from their Jewish roots.

The people persecuted in the Spanish Inquisition were "New Christians", which is to say Jews and Muslims who converted to Christianity in order to continue living in Spain (since Judaism and Islam were banned), but who were believed to be secretly practicing their faith of birth. Hundreds of thousands of Jews and Muslims who converted to Christianity were persecuted. Later, the Spanish Inquisition also persecuted Protestant reformers.

What were the religious persecutions in the Middle Ages?

The Catholic Church in the Middle Ages were the primary source of persecution during the Middle Ages. They persecuted the Jewish people, Protestants, anyone that did not believe in the Bible, and anyone they thought was a witch. The Catholic Church and Christians persecuted and killed Jews because they blamed the Jews for Jesus' death. The Jews were often blamed for wrongdoings in the community and Christians used that as an excuse to persecute and kill them. Both the Catholic Church and Jews persecuted Christians (Protestant and other new denominations) during the Middle Ages because they strayed away from typical beliefs. Another group of people that were persecuted were people believed to be witches. They were hated by the Catholic Church and Christians and thought to be evil and working with the devil. People who were accused to be witches were tortured until they confessed. This probably led to a false confession the majority of the time.

Why did the Romans persecute the Jews more the Christians?

It is not clear that the Romans persecuted Jews more than Christians. Under some emperors, Christians were heavily persecuted, under others, Jews. During the great Jewish revolts that started in the years 68 and 132, Roman persecution of the Jews was intense. The emperor Hadrian, who put down the second revolt, probably killed half a million Jews in the process. Nero, on the other hand, seems to have really disliked Christians.

What were the differences between the persecutions of the Jews and those of the Christians?

A:One difference is that Jews have been persecuted by Christians since the fourth-century reign of Emperor Constantine. Historians say that in the previous three centuries, official, widespread persecution of Christians amounted to no more than twelve years in total. Those who would persecute the Jews (and pagans) have been far more ruthless and consistent in pursuing their objectives than were those who persecuted the early Christians.

Why are Christians the most persecuted people?

It is quite probable that others have a better claim to being most persecuted. Think of the position of the Roma (also known as Gypsies), Dalit (Untouchables in India), and Jews as just a few examples. What fraction of all Christians have been martyred for their faith in the past 1000 years? What fraction of all Jews?

What was the relationship between Christians and Jews?

Persecutor and Persecuted. Of course, this is overly simplistic, but by and large, in Christian States, Jews were repressed, forcibly converted to Christianity, subject to pogroms and massacres, and lived in terrible inequality. Not all Christians were horrible, but the majority, if not violently Anti-Semitic, did not see Jews as equal human beings as Christians.
