a picture is worth a thousand words Images are visual words. Since there were many people who were illiterate, the "picture story" was understandable to them. A second reason was that many times the stone carvers were themselves illiterate. They were slaves or lower classed people to were simply copying from a test with o understanding of the meaning. They could make mistakes. With the visual image and the symbolism contained in it, everyone was able to understand the message.
