In the terrible battles of WW1 thousands of soldiers were totally torn apart by shelling on the vast battlefields. Many body parts were lost in French and Belgian mud, many soldiers could never be identified, or even found. - Almost 65,000 Canadian soldiers died and at least 5,000 could never be found afterwards. It is said that every small village across Canada has at least 2 or 3 men in that number.

What are the values of a roman soldier?

The values of a Roman soldier were ones of honor. Not only did he value the perfect condition of his equipment and weapons, but also the honor of his legion and his century. If his unit did well, there were rewards and badges. He was in perpetual disgrace if his legion lost a battle or fell short in some other way and sometimes it took several campaign seasons for a disgraced legion to redeem itself.
