The senate didn't kill Caesar - a few individual senators did, in 44BC. They were afraid that he would ask to be dictator for life and they did not want the republic Rome to fall butt in the process they destroyed it themselves. Octavian was Caesar's adopted son and took over the reins of power after the death of his 'father', became emperor many years later and was awarded the title of Augustus Caesar.

The times and the personalities of the two men played a large part in the acceptance of Octavian and the rejection of Caesar. At the time of Caesar, the republic was still the form of government, although in it's death throes. When Octavian came into power, most senators felt that it was better to pass off the majority of power. Julius was a "rapid fire" type of personality. He wanted things done immediately instead of waiting for the (usually) long-winded discussions of the senate, and many times he used his powers as dictator to override the senate. Octavian, on the other hand, was cautious. He eased the republic into the principate, by returning some powers to the senate, but keeping the most important one for himself. He also restructured the senate, appointing members who were favorable to himself. He was also very careful never to use the word "king". He called himself the "princeps" or first citizen.

Why did the senate kill Caesar?

In the end it all basically comes down to one thing: Power. Yes, Caesar may have been arrogant and impatient, but the real reason for his dislike was his power. The senate was always used to the equal power of the Roman Republic among the senators, and when Caesar became Dictator, they did not like it at all. Caesar was hugely popular with the plebians and common folk, being as he had always sent his plunder in Gaul to be sent back and handed out to the citizens. He was also very popular with his troops, all of which gained tremendous respect for him during the Gallic wars. Because of all this, the Senate disliked him.
